how the darkroom works
before screens, photographs were printed by hand in a room lit only by a dim red light, which the paper cannot see. this is that room.
hold the tray. the developer washes over the paper and the two photographs appear, darkest parts first. the longer you hold, the darker the print.
let go and it stops where it is. hold again for more. hold too long and it goes muddy.
fix it. fixing makes the print permanent. it hangs on the line to dry and stays there, even when you come back.
leave it unfixed, or turn the lights on too soon, and the light turns the paper black. that print is lost.
lights on shows every photograph in colour, with the prints you made.
